From Sapporo in Hokkaido to Obihiro, a city in eastern Hokkaido, the limited express trains "Ozora'' and "Tokachi'' run. Among these, the limited express "Oozora'' goes further east to Kushiro. Trains run on the Chitose Line from Sapporo to Minami-Chitose(South Chitose), the Ishikatsu Line from Minami-Chitose to Kami-ochiai loop, and the Nemuro Main Line (Obihiro-Kushiro Subdivision) from Kami-ochiai loop to Kushiro Station. Since the Sekisho Line and Nemuro Main Line are not electrified, these limited express trains use Kiha 261 series 1000 series diesel trainsets. The maximum speed of the train is 120km/h.
北海道の札幌から北海道東部の都市、帯広までは特急「おおぞら」号、特急「とかち」号が走ります。このうち特急「おおぞら」号はさらに東へ釧路まで行きます。列車は札幌から南千歳までは千歳線、南千歳から上落合信号場までは石勝線、上落合信号場から釧路駅までは根室本線(帯広・釧路区間)を走ります。石勝線、根室本線は電化されていないので、これらの特急列車には気動車であるキハ261系1000番台が使用されます。列車の最高速度は120km/hです。
On the Chitose Line, limited express trains stop at Sapporo, Shin-Sapporo(New Sapporo), and Minami-Chitose(South Chitose) stations. At Minami-Chitose Station, the "Airport" rapid train passes crossing rail and stops at the platform on the opposite side. So passengers from Kushiro or Obihiro can transfer to the "Airport" rapid train bound for New Chitose Airport, and passengers from New Chitose Airport can change trains to the limited express train, "Ozora'' or "Tokachi'' bound for Obihiro or Kushiro on the same platform. From Minami Chitose onward, the train goes the Sekisho Line.
千歳線では特急は札幌から新札幌、南千歳の順に停車します。南千歳駅では快速「エアポート」がクロスレールを渡り反対側のホームに停車するため、釧路・帯広方面からの乗客は新千歳空港行の快速「エアポート」に、新千歳空港からの乗客は帯広・釧路方面への特急「おおぞら」・「とかち」に同じプラットホーム上で乗り換えをすることができます。
南千歳から先は、列車は石勝線に入ります。
The Sekisho Line's rail tracks are highly upgraded, allowing trains to run at a maximum speed of 120 km/h without slowing down even on Y-shaped turnouts.
Shin-Yubari(New Yubari) Station is the gateway station to Yubari City, and until 2019, the Yubari Branch Line connected this station to Yubari Station. Yubari used to be a town where there was a coal mine, but it declined after the mine closed, and is now famous for producing melons.
In the section from Shin-Yubari Station to Shintoku Station on the Nemuro Main Line, the train enters a mountainous area with a series of tunnels.
Note that local trains are not operated in the section between Shin-Yubari Station and Shintoku Station, and passengers using the stations between Shin-Yubari and Shintoku Station can board the limited express train by paying only the fare without paying the express fare. However, all limited express trains don't have non-reserved seats, and they can only sit in an empty seat, but if a passenger with a reserved seat ticket appears, they must offer their seat to that person.
石勝線の線路は高規格化されていて、列車はY字型分岐器上でも速度を落とすことなく最高時速120km/hで走行することができます。
新夕張駅は夕張市の玄関口の駅で、2019年までは夕張支線がこの駅と夕張駅までの間を結んでいました。夕張はかつて炭坑がありましたが閉山に伴い衰退した町で、現在はメロンの生産で有名です。
新夕張駅から根室本線の新得駅までの区間では、列車はトンネルの連続する山岳地帯に入ります。なお、新夕張駅から新得駅までの区間では普通列車は運転されておらず、新夕張から新得駅までの各駅間を利用する乗客は特急料金を支払わず運賃のみの支払いで特急列車に乗車することができます。但し、特急列車は全車指定席で、空いている座席のみ座ることができますが、指定席券を持った乗客が現れたらその人に席を譲らなければなりません。
All trains stop at Tomamu Station. Tomamu is famous for the Tomamu Ski Resort operated by Hoshino Resorts.
The train enters the Nemuro Main Line (Obihiro-Kushiro Subdivision) from the Kami-Ochiai loop inside the Shin-Karikachi tunnel. The Nemuro Main Line is a railway line that connects Takikawa to Nemuro, but the section from Furano to Kami-Ochiai loop has been abolished.
トマム駅にはすべての列車が停車します。トマムでは星野リゾートが経営するトマムスキー場が有名です。
新狩勝トンネル内にある上落合信号場から、列車は根室本線(帯広・釧路区間)に入ります。なお、根室本線は滝川から根室までを結ぶ鉄道路線ですが、このうち富良野から上落合信号場までの区間は廃止されました。
All trains stop at Shintoku Station. Shintoku Station is located in Shintoku Town on the western edge of the Tokachi Plain, and Shintoku Town is famous for producing buckwheat noodles. From this station onwards, the train runs along the Tokachi Plain section.
新得駅ではすべての列車が停車します。新得駅は十勝平野の西端にある新得町にある駅で、新得町はソバの生産で有名です。列車はこの駅から先は十勝平野の区間を走ります。
Obihiro is a city located in the Tokachi Plain with a population of approximately 160,000 people, and Obihiro Station is the last stop on the limited express train "Tokachi''. The section from Kashiwarindai Station to Obihiro Station in Obihiro City is elevated. The limited express train runs the 220.2km section from Sapporo to Obihiro in approximately 2.5 hours to 2 hours and 50 minutes.
帯広は十勝平野にある人口約16万人を有する都市で、帯広駅は特急「とかち」号の終点です。帯広市内の柏林台駅から帯広駅までの区間は高架化されています。特急列車は札幌から帯広までの220.2kmの区間を約2時間半から2時間50分かけて走ります。
Ikeda Station is a station in Ikeda Town in the eastern part of the Tokachi Plain, and all trains stop at this station. The Hokkaido Chihoku Kogen Railway once ran from this station to Kitami, a city in northeastern Hokkaido, but it was discontinued in 2006.
池田駅は十勝平野東部にある池田町にある駅で、この駅にはすべての列車が停車します。かつてこの駅から北海道北東部の都市、北見まで北海道ちほく高原鉄道が走っていましたが、2006年に廃止されました。
※The Tsunetoyo loop has a main track and a side track, but trains, including limited express trains, from Obihiro to Kushiro enter the siding track, and trains from Kushiro to Obihiro or Sapporo enter the main track.
※常豊信号場は主本線と側線の整備されたループですが、特急列車を含め帯広から釧路方面への列車は側線に入り、釧路方面から帯広、札幌方面への列車は主本線に入る運用がなされています。
In the section from Atsunai Station to East Shoro loop, train passengers can see the Pacific Ocean from inside the train.
厚内駅から東庶路信号場までの区間では、列車の乗客は車内から太平洋の海を眺めることができます。
Shin-Fuji Station has a freight station attached to it. There is a station with the same name on the Tokaido Shinkansen in Shizuoka Prefecture, Honshu.
Kushiro is a city in eastern Hokkaido with a population of approximately 170,000 people, and is famous for its fishing industry as well as its livestock industry. It is also the gateway to national parks in eastern Hokkaido, such as Kushiro Marsh.
Kushiro Station is the last stop on the limited express train "Ozora,'' and the train takes approximately 4 hours and 10 minutes to 4 and a half hours to cover the 348.5 km distance from Sapporo to Kushiro. The Nemuro Main Line (Hanasaki Line) runs from Kushiro Station to Nemuro in the east, and the Senmo Line runs to Abashiri in the north.
新富士駅には貨物駅が併設されています。なお、同じ名前の駅が本州の静岡県の東海道新幹線にあります。
釧路は人口約17万人を有する北海道東部の都市で、畜産業の他に漁業でも有名です。また、釧路湿原などの北海道東部の国立公園への玄関口になっています。
釧路駅は特急「おおぞら」号の終点で、列車は札幌から釧路までの348.5kmを約4時間10分から4時間半かけて走ります。釧路駅から東の根室までは根室本線(花咲線)、北の網走までは釧網線が走ります。
