Alaska is a state located in the northwestern part of the North American continent, and is an isolated state that does not border any other state in the United States. This land was once a colony of Russia, and is in this state because the United States purchased it from the Russian Empire, which was at odds with Great Britain.

Similar to the mainland, Alaska has a 1,435mm gauge Alaska Railroad, which is operated by the state of Alaska. This page introduces the section of the Alaska Railroad from the inland city of Fairbanks to Alaska's largest city, Anchorage.

　アラスカ州は北米大陸の北西部にある州で、米国の他の州とは接していない孤立した地域にある州です。かつてはロシアがこの土地を植民地としていて、アメリカ合衆国が英国と対立していた当時のロシア帝国から購入したため、このような状態になっています。
　アラスカには本土と同様に1,435mmゲージのアラスカ鉄道があり、アラスカ州により運営されています。このページではアラスカ鉄道のうち、内陸部の都市フェアバンクスから、アラスカ州の最大都市アンカレッジまでの区間を紹介します。

Fairbanks is the central city in the interior of Alaska, with a population of approximately 30,000. The Alaska Railroad operates both freight and passenger trains, with passenger trains "Denali Star" and "Aurora" departing from Fairbanks Station. The "Aurora'' runs only on weekends during the winter.

　フェアバンクスはアラスカ州内陸部の中心都市で、人口約3万人を有します。アラスカ鉄道では貨物列車と旅客列車が運行されていて、旅客列車「デナリ・スター」号と「オーロラ」号はフェアバンクス駅を発着します。「オーロラ」号は冬季の週末のみ運転されます。

The train travels along the Healy River, part of the Nenana River system, to Healy Station. After passing Healy Station, the train enters the watershed Denali Pass. Denali Park Station is only open during the summer and serves as the gateway to Mount Denali (Mount McKinley).

　列車はヒーリ―駅まで、ネナナ川水系のヒーリ―川に沿って進みます。ヒーリ―駅を超えると、列車は分水嶺となっているデナリ峠に入ります。デナリ公園駅は夏季のみ営業する駅で、デナリ山(マッキンリー山)への玄関口となっています。

After crossing the pass, the train enters the Susitna River system, which flows to the southwest. Some loops in this region are named after places in other U.S. states, such as Colorado, Denver, Honolulu, Montana, and Houston.
Hurricane is the terminus of the flag-stop train "Hurricane Turn'' from Anchorage, and passengers can board the train from any location between Hurricane and Talkeetna by showing a white cloth toward the train.

　峠を越えると列車は南西部へと流れるスシトナ川水系に入ります。この地域の列車の交換設備には、「コロラド」「デンバー」「ホノルル」「モンタナ」「ヒューストン」等米国の他の州の地名がつけられている箇所があります。
　ハリケーンはアンカレッジからのフラグストップ列車「ハリケーン・ターン」号の終着地点で、ハリケーンからタルキートナまでの区間では乗客は白い布を列車に向かって示すことでどの場所からでも列車に乗車することができます。

Currie Station is currently a station for skiers in the area where the "Aurora'' train stops. Curry was once a resort area with a hotel, but it lost out to the Denali hotel and is now a ghost town.

　カリー駅は現在は「オーロラ」号の停車する周辺でスキーをする人のための駅です。カリーはかつてリゾート地でホテルがありましたが、デナリのホテルに集客に敗れて現在はゴーストタウンになっています。

When the Susitna River splits to the right, the train enters an area near Anchorage.

　スシトナ川が右手に分かれると、列車はアンカレッジ近郊のエリアに入ります。

After passing the approximately 10km double-track section from CP1213 to CP1154, the train will arrive at its final stop, Anchorage Station. The "Denali Star" train will travel approximately 356 miles (approximately 570 km) from Fairbanks to Anchorage, at a maximum speed of 59 mph (96 km) and in about 12 hours.

Anchorage is the largest city in Alaska, with an urban population of approximately 300,000 and a metropolitan area population of approximately 400,000. The main industry is oil and natural gas related industries, and it is also an international trade port and a transportation hub. Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport was once a hub for long-distance passenger flights, but as aircraft performance has improved, passenger flights have become less frequent, and it is now a hub airport for cargo flights.

Additionally, the Alaska Railroad continues from Anchorage to Seward, a town on the Pacific coast.

　CP1213からCP1154までの約10kmの複線区間を過ぎると列車は終点のアンカレッジ駅に到着します。「デナリ・スター」号はフェアバンクスからアンカレッジまでの約356マイル(約570km)を、最高速度59マイル(96キロ)、所要時間約12時間で走行します。
　アンカレッジはアラスカ州最大の都市で、都市人口約30万人、都市圏人口約40万人を有します。基幹産業は石油や天然ガス関連の産業で、また国際貿易港として交通の中継点になっています。テッド・スティーブンズ・アンカレッジ国際空港はかつては航空旅客便の長距離路線の寄港地でしたが、航空機の性能が向上したことにより旅客便はあまり立ち寄らなくなり、現在は貨物航空便のハブ空港となっています。
　なお、アラスカ鉄道はアンカレッジから先、太平洋岸の町であるスワードまで線路が続いています。
