Palmerston North is New Zealand's eighth largest metropolitan area, with an urban population of approximately 82,500 as of June 2023. It is known as a thriving city for education and research, centered on Massey University. Palmerston North Station is a junction station where the Palmerston North/Gisborne Line to the east coast joins, and is the starting station for the medium-distance train ”Capital Connection'' to Wellington.
パーマストンノースはニュージーランドで８番目に大きな都市圏で、都市人口は2023年6月時点で約82,500人です。マッセイ大学を中心に教育・研究の盛んな都市として知られています。パーマストンノース駅では東海岸へのパーマストンノース・ギズボーン線が合流するジャンクション駅で、中距離列車「キャピタルコネクション」号のウェリントン行きの始発駅となっています。
From Waikanae Station, the Kapiti Line also runs to Wellington Station. In the future, the Kapiti Line will be extended to Otaki Station, and there are plans to extend it further to Levin Station. It becomes double track from a little south of Waikanae Station to Wellington. There is a temporary single track section south of Paekakariki Station, where passengers can enjoy beautiful views of the Tasman Sea. After passing Takapu Road station, the train enters two long tunnels. Before these tunnels were built, the North Island Main Trunk followed the route of the Johnsonville Line. Shortly after joining the Hutt Valley Line (Wairarapa Line), the train arrives at Wellington Station.
ワイカナエ駅から先はカピティ線と呼ばれる電車もウェリントン駅まで走行します。カピティ線は将来オタキ駅まで延伸され、更にレヴィン駅まで延伸される計画があります。ワイカナエ駅の少し南からウェリントンまでは複線になります。
パエカカリキ駅の南側では一時的に単線になる区間があり、そこでは乗客はタスマン海の美しい景色を眺めることができます。
タカプ・ロード駅を過ぎると列車は２本の長大トンネルに入ります。これらのトンネルができる前は、北島幹線はジョンソンビル線のルートを経由していました。ハット・ヴァレー線(ワイララパ線)と合流して程なくして列車はウェリントン駅に到着します。
