The North Auckland Line is a 284.1km line that runs from Westfield Junction in south Auckland to Otiria via Newmarket, Swanson, Waitakere and Whangarei. This page deals with the northern section from Newmarket to Otiria.
North of Otiria on the North Auckland line was once the Opua branch line. Coal was transported from Kawakawa to Opua in the 19th century. In 1925, the Opua Branch was connected to the North Auckland Line, but in the 1980s the containerization of freight transport reduced freight traffic to Opua, and the Opua Branch was discontinued. Additionally, on the Opua branch line, the Bay of Islands Vintage Railway operates the steam locomotive Gabriel or the diesel locomotives between Kawakawa and Te Akeake.
On the Opua side of Kawakawa Station, there are a rail stretch on National Route 1's Kawakawa Street.

北オークランド線のオティリアから北側にはかつて、オプア支線がありました。カワカワからオプアまでの石炭輸送が１９世紀に行われていました。1925年にオプア支線は北オークランド線とつながりましたが、1980年代の貨物輸送のコンテナ化でオプアへの貨物輸送が減少し、オプア支線は廃止されました。なお、オプア支線ではカワカワからテ アケアケの間で 「ベイ・オブ・アイランズ保存鉄道」が 蒸気機関車のガブリエル もしくはディーゼル機関車のフレデリックを運行しています。
カワカワ駅のオプア方では、国道１号線のカワカワ通りの道路上に線路があります。
Bay of Islands Vintage Railway
The line from Otiria to Kauri is currently suspended, but there are plans to upgrade the track to Otiria and install a container terminal at Otiria.
Freight trains on the North Auckland Line are operated from Fonterra Kauri for Auckland. Only freight trains run from here to Swanson.
Whangarei is the capital of the Northland region. It is a resort area with beautiful nature, and there is an art center designed by the late Austrian architect Hundertwasser, who loved the rich nature and the beautiful curves of buildings.

There was a branch line west from Waitotira to Dargaville, which mainly transported logs, but it was discontinued in 2014. Tourist rail carts run on abandoned railway tracks in Daggerville.

Passenger trains on the Auckland Western Line used to run up to Waitakere, but when it had tried to be electrified it was discovered that the cross-sectional area of the Waitakere tunnel was too small and needed renovation, so the passenger's trains were abolished in 2015. The service has been replaced by buses from Waitakere to Swanson.
The Auckland West Line train runs from Swanson to Newmarket, and the line is double-tracked and electrified with AC 25kv, 50hz.
ワイタケレまでは、かつて「オークランド西線」の旅客列車が走っていましたが、電化するにあたってワイタケレトンネルの断面積が小さすぎて改修が必要なことが判明したため、2015年に廃止されてこの区間はバスによる運行に代わりました。
スワンソンからニューマーケットまでは「オークランド西線」の電車が走っており、路線は複線化されていて交流25kv50hzで電化されています。
