Lyttelton, a port town east of Christchurch, is the starting point for the Southern Main Line. It is the export port for Christchurch.

The "TranzAlpine" passenger train on the Midland Line runs from Christchurch Station to Rolleston Station. South of Rolleston, this Main south line is a freight-only route, except near Dunedin.

　クライストチャーチの東にある港町のリトルトンが南本線の起点です。そこはクライストチャーチにおける輸出港となっています。

　クライストチャーチ駅からロールストン駅は、旅客列車はミッドランド線のトランツアルパイン号が走ります。ロールストンから南においては、ダニーデン付近を除きこの路線は貨物専用路線となっています。

Timaru is the most populous town on the Canterbury Plains, after Christchurch and Rolleston, and is home to New Zealand's second largest fishing port. The line runs close to the coastline from near Timaru Station.

　ティマルーはカンタベリー平野でクライストチャーチ、ロールストンに次いで人口の多い街で、ニュージーランドで第２位の規模をもつ漁港があります。路線はティマルー駅付近から海岸線の近くを通ります。

Oamaru is a port town that developed during the gold rush following the discovery of gold mines. However, it was not able to develop as much as Dunedin because the sandy coast made it difficult for large ships to dock.

In Oamaru, the Oamaru Steam and Rail train runs every Sunday from Harbourside Station to Quarry Siding Station.

　オマル―は金山の発見によりゴールドラッシュで発展した港町です。但し、砂浜海岸で大型船の接岸が困難であったためダニーデンほど発展することはできませんでした。
　オマル―の市内では、ハーバーサイド駅からクオリーサイディング駅までオマル―蒸気鉄道が毎週日曜日走ります。

Dunedin is the most populous city in the southern part of New Zealand's South Island. This city originally flourished due to the gold rush, but it developed as a port town because it had a good natural harbor. Today, it is home to a variety of industries including manufacturing, publishing, art, and technology, and is also known as a university town with many students, mainly from the University of Otago and the Otago Polytechnic.

The Dunedin Railways, tourist railways, departs from Dunedin Station, mainly the "Inlander", which runs from Dunedin station to Hindon station on the Taieri Branch Line via the old Wingatui station, the "Seasider", which runs north from Dunedin station to Waitati station, and "The Victorian", which runs north from Dunedin station to Oamaru station.

　ダニーデンはニュージーランド南島南部の人口最大都市です。この都市ももともとはゴールドラッシュで栄えた街ですが、天然の良港を有していたことで港町として発展しました。現在では製造業、出版、芸術、テクノロジーなど多様な産業があり、オタゴ大学やオタゴ工科大学を中心に学生が多く学園都市としても知られています。
　ダニーデン駅からは観光鉄道のダニーデン鉄道が発着していて、主にダニーデン駅から旧ウィンガトゥィ駅を経由してタイエリ支線のヒンドンまで運行するインランダー号、ダニーデン駅から北へワイタティ駅まで運行するシーサイダー号、ダニーデン駅から北へオマル―まで運転されるザ・ヴィクトリアン号が運転されます。

Dunedin Station has a Flemish renaissance style station building and is a symbol of the city.

Invercargill is New Zealand's southernmost city, located approximately 600km from Christchurch and has a thriving dairy industry. The Main South Line ends at Invercargill station.

Invercargill has branch lines to the north and south. To the south is the Bluff Line, which runs from Invercargill Station to the export port of Bluff. Bluff is New Zealand's southernmost town and the southernmost point of New Zealand's railways. To the north is the Ohai Line, which primarily transports coal. The Ohai coal mine closed in 2021, but cargo transportation continues.

　インバーカ―ギルはクライストチャーチから約600kmのところにある、酪農産業が盛んなニュージーランド最南端の都市です。南本線はインバーカ―ギル駅が終点です。
　インバーカ―ギルには北と南に支線があります。南にはブラフ線があり、インバーカ―ギル駅から輸出港であるブラフ港までを結びます。なお、ブラフはニュージーランド最南端の町で、ニュージーランドの鉄道の最南端でもあります。北にはオハイ線があり、主に石炭の輸送が行われています。オハイ炭鉱は2021年に閉山されましたが、現在でも貨物輸送は続けられています。
