The JR Nippo Main Line is a railway line operated by JR Kyushu that connects Kokura Station, the terminal station in Kitakyushu city, with Kagoshima Station in the southern Kyushu city of Kagoshima, via Oita Station and Miyazaki Station. The "Sonic" limited express train is a limited express train that connects Hakata, the terminal station on the JR Kagoshima Main Line in Fukuoka City, with Oita, via Kokura Station. At Kokura Station, the "Sonic" limited express train turns around and joins the Nippo Main Line for Oita. The Sanyo Shinkansen(HSR) also stops at Kokura Station, so passengers traveling from Osaka to Oita need to transfer from the Shinkansen to the "Sonic" limited express train at Kokura Station.
The Nippo Main Line is electrified with 20kV 60Hz AC, and most of the section from Kokura to Oita is double tracked. The Hita-Hikosan Line branches off at Jono Station. The Hita-Hikosan Line is not electrified, and local trains on the Hitahikosan Line are operated by diesel cars. Trains on this line run onto the Nippo Main Line up to Kokura Station.
All Sonic Express trains stop at Yukuhashi Station. Stations marked with ★★ are stations where all Sonic Express trains stop, and stations marked with ★ are stations where some Sonic Express trains stop. The Heisei Chikuho Railway, a third-sector railway, branches off from Yukuhashi Station.
The Sonic Express is a pendulum(tilt) train, and this train can run on curves at up to 30km/h faster than normal trains. The maximum speed is 130km/h.
After passing Nishi-Yashiki Station, the Nippo Main Line trains enter mountainous areas. Between Nishi^Yashiki Station and Tateishi Station, and between Naka-Yamaga Station and Kitsuki Station, the upper and lower tracks are separated, so you can imagine how difficult it was to double-track the tracks. However, between Tateishi Station and Naka-Yamaka Station, and between Kitsuki Station and Hiji Station, the tracks are still single-track.
Beppu is a city famous for its hot springs. Beppu Station is elevated. From Beppu Station to Nishi-Oita Station, passengers can enjoy a view of Beppu Bay from the train.
Oita Station is the terminal station in Oita City, the prefectural capital of Oita Prefecture, and is also elevated. The station is also served by the JR Kyudai Main Line from Yufuin Onsen and the JR Hohi Main Line from Kumamoto. One round trip of the "Sonic" Ltd. Express runs further on to Saiki Station, but all other "Sonic" Ltd. Express trains terminate at Oita Station. The "Nichirin" Ltd. Express runs south from Oita towards Nobeoka, Miyazaki, and Miyazaki Airport.
The "Sonic" train takes 2hours to 2 hours & 20 minutes to get from Hakata in Fukuoka to Oita, and 1 hour 20 to 1 hour and a half to cover the 132.9 km journey from Kokura to Oita. The "Sonic" will use the 883 series trains, known as the Blue Sonic, and the 885 series trains, known as the White Sonic.
