Christchurch is the largest city on New Zealand's South Island, with a population of approximately 400,000 people. The city was once home to a network of numerous tram lines, but as motorization progressed, the railways declined.
The streetcars were completely abolished in 1954, but the tram vehicles were preserved by the Tramway Historical Society, which is made up mainly of streetcar enthusiasts. In 1995, a 2.5km route around Christchurch's city center was built and began operating as a tourist tram.
The 1.4km route south to High Street has since been opened, making the total length of the line 3.9km. All lines are electrified with 600V DC. The northern loop section of the route is one-way clockwise, and the southern section also has a set direction of travel.
クライストチャーチは、人口約40万人を有するニュージーランド南島で最大の都市です。この都市ではかつて多数の路面電車の路線網が張り巡らされていましたが、モータリゼーションの進行により鉄道が衰退しました。
路面電車は1954年に全廃されましたが、車両は路面電車の愛好家を中心とした路面電車歴史協会により保存されました。1995年にクライストチャーチの市内中心部を一周する全長2.5kmのルートが建設され、観光用の路面電車として運行を開始しました。
その後ハイ・ストリートまでの南側の1.4kmのルートが開通し、路線は全長3.9kmとなっています。全線が直流600Vで電化されています。路線の北側の環状線部分は時計回りの一方通行になっており、南側の区間も進行方向が決められています。
The starting station for the tram is Stop No. 1 (Cathedral Junction), a pedestrian street in a commercial facility. The train exits onto the road through a passageway on the first floor of the Hotel 115 building. Surprisingly, a tram passes right behind the chairs behind the store's counter. Furthermore, at Stop No. 18 (Regent Street) on the northern loop section, the train will also run directly behind the table seats of restaurants in the pedestrian zone. The driver drives at a speed of about 10 km/h while guiding the train, but I think they must be very careful when driving because the distance between the train and pedestrians is too close.
As soon as you see Christ Church Cathedral(from which the name "Christchurch" comes from) on your left, the tracks from the south join together and the train will arrive at Stop No. 2. Two trains can stop at this stop at the same time.
The pink colered part of the diagram is mainly streets for pedestrians (there are some streets that cars can also enter into). The crossover at Stop No. 8 on the south side was once used as a turnaround when Stop No. 7 was not open. This crossover rail track is the only track where the direction of travel of the tram cars can be reversed.
The streetcar operates from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and fares are $40 for adults (16 and older) and free for up to 3 people under 15 per adult. The train takes approximately 50 minutes to travel the entire line. Please check the official website for detailed information.
路面電車の始発駅はストップNo.1(カセドラル・ジャンクション)という商業施設の歩行者通りを発着します。電車はホテル115の建物の1階の通路を通り道路に出ます。なんと、店舗のカウンター越しの椅子のすぐ後ろを路面電車が通り抜けていきます。なお、北側の環状線区間のストップNo.18(レージェント・ストリート)においても、歩行者天国にある飲食店のテーブル席の真後ろを電車が走行します。運転士さんはガイドをしながら時速10km/h程度で運転しますが、電車と歩行者との距離が近いので運転に関してかなり神経を使っていると思います。
「クライストチャーチ」の名前の由来になっているクライストチャーチ大聖堂を左手に見ると程なく南側からの線路が合流し、ストップNo.2に到着します。この停留所では２つの電車を同時に停車させることができます。
図のピンク色の部分は主に歩行者用のストリートです(一部車も進入できる通りがあります)。南側のストップNo.8にある渡り線は、かつてストップNo.7が開通していなかったときに折り返し用として使用されていました。この渡り線は、路面電車の車両の進行方向の向きを反対にすることのできる唯一の線路です。
路面電車は午前9時から午後5時まで運行されていて、運賃は大人(16歳以上)が40ドル、15歳以下は大人1名につき3名まで無料となっています。電車は全線を約50分かけて走行します。詳しい情報に関しては公式ホームページをご確認願います。
