From Chile's capital, Santiago, there is a railway line to the north that connects to Valparaíso. This page introduces the railway wiring diagram from Quintero, a town located northwest of Santiago facing the Pacific Ocean, to the capital Santiago.

The San Pedro - Quintero Branch is a 39km line connecting Quintero and San Pedro. The rail track runs north from Quintero to Ventanas. There are no passenger trains operating on this line, only freight trains. Although Ventanas and Quintero are prosperous with metal smelters, thermal power plants, and industrial parks, environmental pollution is becoming more serious.
In the future, EFE Valparaíso plans to rebuild this line as Line 3 and resume passenger transportation.

At the San Pedro junction, the Quintero-San Pedro branch joins the Valparaiso-Santiago railway.
The Valparaiso-Santiago Railway is a railway route that connects the port city of Valparaiso facing the Pacific Ocean to Santiago, and as of 2024, passenger trains are only operating in the Valparaiso metropolitan area. Passenger trains are not operated in the section from San Pedro to La Calera Station, but it is planned to electrify it with 3000V DC and extend the Valparaiso passenger railway line to La Calera Station.
La Calera Station is the starting station for Chile's Northern Transversal Railway. The Northern Transversal Railway uses the meter gauge(1,000 mm), unlike the Valparaiso-Santiago Railway's track width of 1,676 mm. Although it is a short 1.7km section of the Northern Transversal Railway, a free passenger rail bus runs from La Calera Station.
The Llay Llay-Los Andes branch line branches off from Llay Llay Station. This line is an Iberian gauge (1,676mm) route and can be accessed by freight trains from Santiago and Valparaiso.
On the other hand, from Los Andes Station there is the Transandine Railway that heads towards the Andes Mountains, but this route uses meter gauges. The Transandine Railway used to extend across the Andes Mountains to Mendoza, Argentina, but as of 2024 it has been separated from the Argentine side due to difficulties in maintaining the route.
The Transandine Railway is an Abt type railway that climbed a steep slope, was not compatible with vehicles on other meter gauge lines, had limited loading capacity, and was difficult to carry cargo between it and the Iberian gauge line. It was not a commercial success for both passenger and cargo operations, partly because it required transshipment.
The train runs through sparsely populated hilly and steppe areas between Llay Llay and Batuco stations. The section from Batuco Station to Santiago falls within the metropolitan area of Santiago. A passenger railway line called the Santiago-Batuco Railway Line is scheduled to be constructed, and rail passenger transport is scheduled to resume from Batuco Station to Santiago's Quinta Normal Station in 2028.
The planned passenger railway, the Santiago Batuco Railway Line, will have new underground stations in Santiago, Matucana Station and Quinta Normal Station, which will allow passengers to transfer to Santiago's metro lines.
Freight trains running on the Valparaiso-Santiago Railway pass through two single-track tunnels in the center of Santiago, emerge above ground west of Central de Santiago Station, and enter the Southern Transversal Railway line, the main route of Chile's railways.
