Chicago, a large city in the state of Illinois, is known as a railroad city and serves as the biggest hub point for various railroad lines throughout the United States. Amtrak operates a number of passenger trains centered around Chicago Union Station. The "Wolverine" train is an intercity express train that connects Chicago and Pontiac via Detroit.
In addition to Amtrak, Chicago has a commuter rail system called "Metra" and a city rail system called "Chicago L". In addition to Chicago Union Station, Metra has three terminal stations: Chicago LaSalle Street Station, Chicago Millennium Station, and Chicago Ogilvie Transportation Center.
The train departs from Chicago Union Station and heads south on the Norfolk Southern Railroad Chicago Line.
On the right, the BNSF Railroad line for Omaha & Kansas City, and the Heritage Corridor for St. Louis branch off. Amtrak's New Orleans-bound the "City of New Orleans" train, and Carbondale-bound the "Illini" and "Saluki" trains were backed up from Chicago Union Station to the Junction with the Heritage Corridor and enters to the Canadian National Railway Chicago Subdivision rail tracks that run parallel to the Metra Electric District.
In the future, a flyover link will be constructed from Union Station to CN/Chicago Subdivision.
Afrer passeng the freight terminal, Union Pacific's Villa Grove Subdivision, which serves as the route for Amtrak the "Cardinal" train for Indianapolis and Cincinnati. The intersection with the Metra Rock Island District used to be a grade crossing of the diamond cross, but in recent years the Rock Island Line has been elevated, the line became to fly over of the NS Chicago Line..
The NS Chicago Line tracks parallel CSX Railroad and the Interurban, South Shore Line to Michigan City. CSX Railroad is a rival freight railroad company to NS Railroad, and the South Shore Line is a commuter rail line that departs from Chicago Millennium Station of Metra Electric District, and runs over 100 km to South Bend Airport via Michigan City.
At Porter Junction, the Detroit-bound Amtrak "Wolverine" and the Port Huron-bound "Blue Water" branch from the NS Chicago Line to the Amtrak Michigan Line. The Amtrak Michigan Line is Amtrak's only rail line outside of the Northeast Corridor, and trains run at a maximum speed of 110 mph (177 km/h). Meanwhile, the "Pere Marquette" branched off to CSX Railroad's Grand Rapids Subdivision and headed toward Grand Rapids. The "Lakeshore Limited'' and the "Capitol Limited'' continue on the NS Railroad Chicago Line, heading toward Toledo and Cleveland.
Canadian National Railway's freight rail lines join at Battle Creek Station. On the Michigan Line, CN Railway owns facilities around Battle Creek Station. The "Blue Water" branches off to CN Railroad's Flint Subdivision from this station.
The Kalamazoo to Dearborn section of the Michigan Line is owned by the state of Michigan through the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). Norfolk Southern Railroad has exclusive rights to use the railroad for freight trains on this line.
After passing Dearborn Station, the train enters the CN Railroad rail tracks at a junction and arrives at Detroit Station. The Michigan Line rail tracks reach the Windsor Subdivision of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPKC), and the tracks continue to Toronto, Canada.
The train connects Chicago to Detroit, 281 mi (452 km), in approximately 5 hours to 5 hours and 40 minutes. Detroit Station is not the terminus for the Wolverine; the train runs north from Detroit Station to Pontiac Station.
