Amtrak's "Hiawatha Service" is an intercity express train that connects Milwaukee and Chicago with five to seven round trips per day. The train runs on Canadian Pacific Railway's (CPKC) C&M (Chicago & Milwaukee) subdivision rail tracks to Chicago. Union Pacific Railroad's Milwaukee Subdivision intersects with the CPKC tracks south of the Milwaukee station and runs parallel to the east side of the CPKC C&M Subdivision rail tracks.
The Milwaukee Airport Station opened in 2005, and a free shuttle bus connects the train to the Milwaukee Airport passenger terminal. This station only has a platform on the northbound track, but a second platform is under construction on the southbound track. Once completed, the Chicago-bound "Hiawatha Service" and "Borealis", which stop at this station, will no longer need to change to the eastern rail tracks.

At Rondout Junction, Chicago's "Metra" commuter rail line, the Milwaukee District North Line joins the CPKC C&M Subdivision. On the Milwaukee District North Line, Amtrak trains only stop at Glenview Station and the final stop, Chicago Union Station.

There are at-grade intersections between Metra lines, known as "diamond crossings,'' including one between Forest Glen and Mayfair stations, and one between Western and Chicago Union stations. "Diamond Crossing" causes train congestion and delays. There seems to be a proposal to make these plane intersections three-dimensional.

Amtrak trains from Milwaukee enter Chicago Union Station from the north side. Amtrak's "Hiawatha Service" and "Borealis" travel the 86 miles (138 km) from Milwaukee to Chicago in about 1.5 hours and at a maximum speed of 79 mph (127 km/h).
