JR Kyushu’s limited express “Kirishima” connects Miyazaki & Kagoshima, cities in southern Kyushu

The limited express train "Kirishima'' runs on the about 126km section from Miyazaki Station to Kagoshima-Chuo Station on the JR Nippo Main Line. The trainsets used are the 787 series, the same as the limited express trains "Nichirin'' and "Hyuga,'' and the trains operate at a maximum speed of 100 km/h in this section. The travel time from Miyazaki to Kagoshima-Chuo is about 2 hours and 10 minutes. Until recently, the express bus "Hamayu'' was operated as a rival, but this bus discontinued in 2021, and the public transportation between Miyazaki and Kagoshima is dominated by the limited express "Kirishima.''

Miyakonojo is a city in western Miyazaki Prefecture that is prosperous in agriculture, livestock farming, and forestry. With easy access to expressways, this city is also a logistics hub for southern Kyushu, and is also home to Sumitomo Rubber's tire manufacturing factory. Although this area is part of Miyazaki Prefecture, it once belonged to the Satsuma domain, which had its base in Kagoshima, and as a result, the residents speak a dialect closer to the Kagoshima dialect (Satsuma dialect) than the Miyazaki dialect. Please note that the center of Miyakonojo is located near Nishi(West)-Miyakonojo Station, not Miyakonojo Station.

Kirishima City is the second most populous area in Kagoshima Prefecture after Kagoshima City. Kirishima City is a city that merged a total of seven local governments, including Kokubu City, Hayato Town, and Kirishima Town. In the area of former Kirishima Town, there is Kirishima Jingu(Shrine), which is famous as a power spot to improve your luck. However, it is more than 6 km away from Kirishima-Jingu Station, where all JR Nippo Main Line trains stop. The area of the former Kokubu City and Hayato Town is an area with good transportation links, and is a logistics hub for Kagoshima Prefecture as there are expressways and Kagoshima Airport is located nearby. Tobacco production used to be popular here, but the scale of production has been shrinking in recent years. The JR Hisatsu Line, an old route of the JR Kagoshima Main Line, meets at the station.

Kagoshima was the center of the former Satsuma domain, which was ruled by the feudal lord Shimazu clan from the Middle Ages to modern times, and is currently the prefectural capital of Kagoshima Prefecture. Historically, samurai such as Saigo Takamori and Okubo Toshimichi are famous for overthrowing the Edo shogunate and establishing the modern Japanese government (Meiji government) in the 19th century. Across Kagoshima Bay, there is a volcano called Sakurajima, and volcanic ash falls on the city on a daily basis.
Kagoshima Station is the terminus of the JR Nippo Main Line & JR Kagoshima Main Line from Kitakyushu, but the terminal station for trains in Kagoshima City is Kagoshima-Chuo(Central) Station, not Kagoshima Station. Some passengers often getting off at Kagoshima Station by mistake, but in that case, they can access the city center of Kagoshima City or Kagoshima-Chuo Station by tram from Kagoshima Station.
Kagoshima-Chuo Station is a terminal station located west of the downtown of Kagoshima City, and the Kyushu Shinkansen and streetcars also connect to this station. This station was called Nishi(West)-Kagoshima Station before the Kyushu Shinkansen opened. Travelers can reach Shin-Osaka Station within four hours by riding the Shinkansen.
