Chicago is a large city in the Midwest of the United States, located in the state of Illinois, and is the largest railroad hub in the US. Many of Amtrak's passenger trains depart from Chicago Union Station, serving various destinations in the US.
The "California Zephyr" runs between Chicago and San Francisco. The "Southwest Chief" runs from Chicago to Los Angeles via Kansas City and Albuquerque. The intercity train "Illinois Zephyr and Carl Sandburg" runs from Chicago to Quincy. These trains depart from Chicago Union Station and head south, turning right onto the Chicago Subdivision of the BNSF Railway, a class 1 freight railroad.
BNSF Railway's Chicago Subdivision also serves Metra's BNSF Line, the Chicago metropolitan area commuter rail service, between Chicago Union Station and Aurora Station. In addition to commuter trains, La Grande Road Station serves the "Illinois Zephyr and Carl Sandburg" train, and all Amtrak passenger trains stop at Naperville Station. Amtrak passenger trains do not stop at stations other than those listed above.
A feature of BNSF Railway's Chicago Subdivision is that the section up to Aurora Station has triple-track. Beyond Aurora, the track becomes double track and the train enters the Mendota subdivision.

BNSF Railway's Mendota Subdivision includes Plano, Mendota, Princeton, Kewanee, and Galesburg stations. The "California Zephyr" only stops at Princeton and Galesburg stations.
From Galesburg Station, the train enters the BNSF Railway Ottumwa Subdivision. South of this station is junctions where the "Illinois Zephyr & Carl Sandburg" goes to the BNSF Railway Brookfield Subdivision, and the "Southwest Chief" goes to the BNSF Railway Chillicothe Subdivision.

Once the train leaves Creston Station, it enters the BNSF Creston Subdivision. The double-track section that continued from Chicago will end and the track will become single-track.
The BNSF Creston Subdivision is a line that connects Creston, Iowa, and Lincoln, the capital of Nebraska. However, the California Zephyr will enter the BNSF Omaha Subdivision at Oleapolis Junction, as it will transit through Omaha, a large city that straddles both states. The BNSF Omaha Subdivision is a detour through Omaha for the BNSF Creston Subdivision.

Omaha is Nebraska's largest city, located on the Missouri River. The metropolitan area extends to the state of Iowa on the other side of the Missouri River, and the metropolitan area has a population of over 1 million people.
Omaha is a hub for railroads and water transportation. The Missouri River is a tributary of the Mississippi River, with Kansas City and St. Louis in its lower reaches. In St. Louis, the Missouri River joins the Mississippi River, and the river continues to Memphis and New Orleans.
It is also famous for being the headquarters of Union Pacific Railroad, a class 1 freight railroad that is a rival company of BNSF Railway, and all lines except BNSF Omaha Subdivision are UP Railroad lines.
Omaha was once home to railroads and the meatpacking industry, but today the industry is diversifying. On the other hand, with the exception of Amtrak's California Zephyr, the only public transportation available on land is buses, which is typical of America's private car society.
The California Zephyr will travel 500 mi (805 km) from Chicago to Omaha in over 9 hours. Eastbound trains depart and arrive at midnight, and westbound trains depart and arrive at 5 a.m., making them convenient for use between Omaha and Denver, but trains departing and arriving at times that are a little difficult to use between Chicago and Omaha.
