In Omaha, the "California Zephyr" runs on BNSF Railway's Omaha Subdivision. This line is a detour through Omaha for the BNSF Railway Creston Subdivision, and at Ashland the train reenters the Creston Subdivision.
The section from Ashland to Nebraska's capital, Lincoln, is double track. Lincoln is the second largest city in Nebraska, but its population is only about 360,000. It is home to Nebraska State University and has a strong character as a university city. The name "Lincoln" comes from President Abraham Lincoln.
After leaving Lincoln Station, the train enters the BNSF Railway Hastings Subdivision and the track becomes single track again.

At Mc Cook Station, the BNSF Railroad line changes its name to the Akron Subdivision. This region is an arid region east of the Rocky Mountains called the Great Plains, and is not very populated. The "California Zephyr" normally passes through this area during the night hours.

Denver is the capital of Colorado and the second most populous mountain city in the United States after Phoenix.
The train departs from Denver Union Station, which serves Denver's commuter rail line RTA. The Amtrak platform at this station has two tracks sandwiched between the RTA platform on the east and west.
The Front Range stretches north and south of Denver and includes many large and small cities, including Colorado Springs and Wyoming's capital Cheyenne. Amtrak plans to run an intercity train service connecting these Front Range cities, which, if the plan goes through, would run from the current location of Denver Union Station to the west side of the light rail lines (RTA's C, E, and W lines). It will be interesting to see if it will be relocated.
The train switches back at Denver Union Station and travels toward Salt Lake City on the Union Pacific Railroad tracks to the Rocky Mountains.
