| The Sunset Route in the United States is a rail line operated by the freight railroad Union Pacific that connects Los Angeles and New Orleans via Tucson, El Paso, San Antonio, and Houston. In addition to freight trains, Amtrak long distance trains run on this route. The “Sunset Limited” runs from Los Angeles to New Orleans, and the “Texas Eagle”, which runs from Los Angeles to Chicago. The two trains are conbined between Los Angeles and San Antonio, and the train splits at San Antonio and runs to each train’s destination. These trains are passenger trains pulled by diesel locomotives, and the passenger cars are two-story Super Liners. Amtrak's "Sunset Limited" and "Texas Eagle" trains start from Los Angeles Union Station. Once the train crosses the CP East Diamond grade crossing, it enters the Union Pacific Railroad's Alhambra Subdivision. This line is single track, but there was a time when it was double track, and there is space left along the route for another rail track. In the Los Angeles metropolitan area, the train stops at Pomona Station and then Ontario Station. From Rancho Junction, the train enters the Yuma subdivision. The rail tracks in the Yuma Subdivision were long ago double track, but were downgraded to single track as motorization progressed. In recent years, double-tracking has begun again with the aim of increasing railway freight transport capacity, and a considerable section has been double-tracked. Palm Springs is a resort town in a desert oasis in southeastern California, where Amtrak train also stops. Train used to stop at Indio, but the passenger station was closed in 1998 due to a decline in ridership. Yuma is a town in southwestern Arizona, and Yuma Station is the first stop for Amtrak trains entering Arizona. Yuma is close to the border with Mexico and is a thriving area for agriculture, including lettuce. | Union Pacific Railroad, which operated the route to Phoenix, discontinued the route in 1996 because it was aging and difficult to maintain. Union Pacific Railroad asked Amtrak, which was passing through Phoenix Station at the time, to pay maintenance costs. But Amtrak, which did not have enough revenue to cover the costs, couldn’t pay the costs, so Amtrak train had to be rerouted to take the same route of UP’s freight trains through Maricopa. To access Phoenix, passengers must transfer to the bus, “Amtrak Thruway Service” at Maricopa Station. Tucson is the second largest city in Arizona after Phoenix, with a population of over 500,000 people. It is located on the eastern edge of the high-tech industry cluster known as the Arizona Sun Corridor. The state government plans to restart passenger train service from Phoenix to Tucson. | El Paso is a large city located in West Texas. It is a city that borders Mexico and forms a metropolitan area along with Ciudad Juarez on the Mexican side. Although it is located in Texas, the time is set in the mountain time zone rather than the Texas time zone, and the city borders the state of New Mexico and Mexico, giving it a Latin American flavor. In El Paso, in addition to the UP Railroad, the BNSF Railway El Paso Subdivision from Albuquerque, a large city in New Mexico, and Ferromex’s main mountain freight railroad, the A Line, run from Mexico City via Chihuahua.
