A variety of trains depart from Denver Union Station in Denver, the capital of Colorado. Denver Union Station is served by Amtrak's "California Zephyr" and RTA's A, B, G, and N commuter rail lines. RTA's A, B, G, and N lines are electrified and operated by stainless steel EMUs. Additionally, Rocky Mountaineer Railroad bus departs from Denver Union Station, and the bus runs to location where Rocky Mountaineer train arrives and departs. Additionally, RTA's LRT lines (C, E, and W lines) depart from the west side of Denver Union Station.
Amtrak also runs a special train called the "Winter Park Express" from Denver to Fraser Winter Park during the winter.

When the "California Zephyr" departs from Denver, it enters the Union Pacific (UP) Railroad tracks rather than the BNSF Railroad. Once the train crosses the Denver metropolitan area, it enters the Rocky Mountain area and passes through many tunnels. The longest Moffat Tunnel is a watershed that enters the Colorado River (Fraser River) system.
Winter Park Ski Resort Station and Fraser Park Station along the Fraser River are the gateway stations to the ski resort, and the "Winter Park Express", which runs during the winter, turns back at Fraser Park Station.

Grand Junction is a city in western Colorado. Beyond Grand Junction, the Colorado River forks to the left, and the train soon enters Utah.

The Cane Creek Subdivision branches off at Crescent Junction in eastern Utah. Rocky Mountaineer tourist train enters the Cane Creek Subdivision at this junction and head toward Moab, the gateway to Arches and Canyonlands National Parks.
The line is double-tracked from the town of Helper in central Utah to Orem in Provo, a city south of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area.

From Provo to Salt Lake City, the UP Railroad tracks are paralleled by the tracks of the region's commuter railroad, "Front Runner". A unique feature of this section is that UP Railroad freight trains and the Amtrak "California Zephyr" run on UP Railroad tracks, while the "Front Runner" runs on tracks independent of UP tracks.
The train will travel 570 miles (918 km) from Denver to Salt Lake City in approximately 14 and a half to 15 hours. The departure and arrival times of the "California Zephyr" at Salt Lake Central Station in Salt Lake City are 11:00 p.m. for westbound trains and 3:00 a.m. for eastbound trains, which is a little difficult for passengers to use.
