The Southwest Chief from Chicago to Los Angeles via the BNSF Railway’s Southern Transcon
The Southwest Chief is an Amtrak long-distance passenger train that runs from Chicago to Los Angeles via Kansas City and Albuquerque. With some exceptions, the train mostly runs on the Southern Transcon of the BNSF Railway, a freight railroad.

El Southwest Chief de Chicago a Los Ángeles vía Southern Transcon de BNSF Railway
El Southwest Chief es un tren de pasajeros de larga distancia de Amtrak que va de Chicago a Los Ángeles, pasando por Kansas City y Albuquerque. Con algunas excepciones, el tren circula principalmente por la Southern Transcon de BNSF Railway, un ferrocarril de carga.

The Southwest Chief enters the branch lines from Southern Transcon.
Between Kansas City, a city on the border between Missouri and Kansas, and Albuquerque, a city in New Mexico, the train leaves the Southern Transcon and enters branch lines of the BNSF Railway. The train leaves Kansas City and travels along the Kansas River, entering the BNSF Topeka Subdivision, stopping at Lawrence Station and then Topeka Station in the Kansas state capital.

El Southwest Chief ingresa a los ramales de Southern Transcon.
Entre Kansas City, ciudad fronteriza entre Misuri y Kansas, y Albuquerque, ciudad de Nuevo México, el tren sale de la Southern Transcon y se adentra en ramales del ferrocarril BNSF. El tren sale de Kansas City y recorre el río Kansas, entrando en la subdivisión BNSF Topeka, con parada en la estación Lawrence y luego en la estación Topeka, en la capital del estado de Kansas.

Train rejoins the South Transcon at Emporia, but shortly thereafter branch off to the La Junta Subdivision. Trains cross the Great Plains during the late night and early morning hours.
Newton Station is the gateway to Wichita, and there is a proposal to extend the "Heartland Flyer", which currently runs between Fort Worth and Oklahoma City, northward and connect with the Southwest Chief at Newton Station.

El tren se reincorpora a la South Transcon en Emporia, pero poco después se desvía hacia la subdivisión La Junta. Los trenes cruzan las Grandes Llanuras durante la noche y la madrugada.
La estación Newton es la puerta de entrada a Wichita, y existe una propuesta para extender el "Heartland Flyer", que actualmente circula entre Fort Worth y Oklahoma City, hacia el norte y conectar con el Southwest Chief en la estación Newton.

The La Junta to Lamy section of the BNSF Railway’s Raton Subdivision, maintained with the cooperation of the state
BNSF Railway doesn't run any freight trains on the section of Raton Subdivision from La Junta to Lamy, so the maintenance costs are covered by subsidies from the federal and state governments. Although there have been frequent proposals to change the route to Wichita, Amarillo, and Clovis via South Transcon, or to replace the line with buses, the section has managed to maintain the route without changing it.
La Junta Station and the next station, Trinidad Station, are junctions for the Colorado Front Range, and the BNSF Railway's Raton Subdivision, Pueblo Subdivision, and Twin Peaks Subdivision lines form the Triangle network.

El Ferrocarril BNSF no opera trenes de carga en el tramo de la Subdivisión Raton de La Junta a Lamy, por lo que los costos de mantenimiento se cubren con subsidios de los gobiernos federal y estatal. Si bien ha habido frecuentes propuestas para cambiar la ruta a Wichita, Amarillo y Clovis a través de South Transcon, o para reemplazar la línea con autobuses, el tramo ha logrado mantener la ruta sin modificarla.

Albuquerque is the largest city in New Mexico, with a population of over 500,000. It is the commercial and industrial center of the state, and is also a tourist city with an old town that retains traces of Spanish culture and indigenous culture.
The New Mexico Rail Runner Express commuter train runs from Santa Fe, the capital of New Mexico, through Albuquerque to Belen in the southern part of the metropolitan area.
The Southwest Chief travels the 895 miles (1,441 km) from Kansas City to Albuquerque in approximately 18 hours.
