The Southwest Chief from Chicago to Los Angeles via the BNSF Railway’s Southern Transcon

The Southwest Chief is an Amtrak long-distance passenger train that runs from Chicago to Los Angeles via Kansas City and Albuquerque. With some exceptions, the train mostly runs on the Southern Transcon of the BNSF Railway, a freight railroad.

El Southwest Chief es un tren de pasajeros de larga distancia de Amtrak que va de Chicago a Los Ángeles, pasando por Kansas City y Albuquerque. Con algunas excepciones, el tren circula principalmente por la Southern Transcon de BNSF Railway, un ferrocarril de carga.

Sections of the Chicago metropolitan area that share track with the Metra-BNSF line

Chicago is a large city in the Midwest of the United States, located in the state of Illinois, and is the largest railroad hub in the US. Many of Amtrak's passenger trains depart from Chicago Union Station, serving various destinations in the US.

The "California Zephyr" runs between Chicago and San Francisco. The "Southwest Chief" runs from Chicago to Los Angeles via Kansas City and Albuquerque. The intercity train "Illinois Zephyr and Carl Sandburg" runs from Chicago to Quincy. These trains depart from Chicago Union Station and head south, turning right onto the Chicago Subdivision of the BNSF Railway, a class 1 freight railroad.

BNSF Railway's Chicago Subdivision also serves Metra's BNSF Line, the Chicago metropolitan area commuter rail service, between Chicago Union Station and Aurora Station. In addition to commuter trains, La Grande Road Station serves the "Illinois Zephyr and Carl Sandburg" train, and all Amtrak passenger trains stop at Naperville Station. Amtrak passenger trains do not stop at stations other than those listed above.

A feature of BNSF Railway's Chicago Subdivision is that the section up to Aurora Station has triple-track. Beyond Aurora, the track becomes double track and the train enters the Mendota subdivision.

Complex Junctions at Galesburg Station

BNSF Railway's Mendota Subdivision includes Plano, Mendota, Princeton, Kewanee, and Galesburg, with the Southwest Chief stopping at Mendota, Princeton, and Galesburg.

At Galesburg, trains enter the BNSF Railway's Ottumwa Subdivision. Just south of the station is a junction where the Illinois Zephyr and Carl Sandburg transfer the BNSF Railway's Brookfield Subdivision. At junction Cameron, the Southwest Chief enters the BNSF Railway's Chillicothe Subdivision, which is on the Southern Transcon.

Norfolk Southern Railway trains also run on the BNSF Marceline Subdivision from WB Junction to CA Junction, where both railroads share double track, as does the parallel section of the Canadian route run by the CN and CPKC.

Heart of America, Kansas City

Kansas City is a city at the junction of the Missouri River and the Kansas River, halfway between St. Louis and Denver to the east and west, and halfway between Minneapolis and Dallas to the north and south. Kansas City is the geographic center of the United States, and is also called the "Heart of America" ​​because it is close to the population center.

In addition to the BNSF Railway, Kansas City is served by many railway lines, including the Canadian Pacific Kansas City Railway (formerly the Kansas City Southern Railway) and the Union Pacific Railroad, and has many railroad junctions. The BNSF Railway's Southern Transcon has elevated sections, allowing trains to run without having to wait for trains to pass at grade crossings.

In addition to the Southwest Chief, the Missouri River Runner, an intercity train that connects Kansas City and St. Louis, departs and arrives at Kansas City Union Station twice a day. The Southwest Chief operates on a schedule in which trains bound for Chicago depart in the morning and trains bound for Los Angeles arrive in the evening, traveling the 437 miles (703 km) from Chicago to Kansas City in about 7 to 8 hours.
