This page introduces the rail track diagram maps from Portland, the biggest city in Oregon, to Sacramento, the capital of California.
Amtrak's "Coast Starlight" and "Cascades" passenger trains run on this section. The "Coast Starlight" is a long-distance train on the West Coast of the United States, connecting Seattle and Los Angeles via Portland, OR and Sacramento. The "Cascades" is an intercity express train that connects Seattle and Eugene via Portland, OR.
The figure below shows the timetable from Portland, OR to Sacramento. There are also bus services from Portland, OR to Eugene. The travel time by train and bus is about the same.

In Portland, OR, Amtrak trains depart from Union Station. The trains run on BNSF Railroad tracks from Vancouver, Canada to Portland, OR via Seattle, while south of Portland, OR they run on Union Pacific Railroad tracks.
Trains travel from Portland, OR to Eugene on the Brooklyn Subdivision of the Union Pacific Railroad. The "Cascades" train stops at Oregon City Station, the next station after Portland Union Station, but the "Coast Starlight" train passes through the station, so users should be careful.

Salem is the capital of Oregon. On the north side of Salem Station, there is a connecting line that connects to the Portland and Western Railroad (formerly Oregon Electric Railroad Main Line) tracks. This rail line parallels this Union Pacific Railroad route from Portland,OR to Eugene.

The area around Albany Station, there are junctions with other freight rail lines, including the Portland and Western Railroad lines.

Eugene Station is the terminus for Amtrak's Cascades trains and buses. The Eugene-Springfield metropolitan area has the second largest population in Oregon, after the Portland metropolitan area.
From Eugene, the Amtrak "Coast Starlight" enters the Union Pacific Railroad's Cascade Subdivision. In Springfield, the Siskiyou Subdivision branches. This is another rail route from Eugene, Oregon to Redding, California.
The Cascade Subdivision continues south along the Willamette River from Springfield for a while. The train crosses the Willamette River bridge before Lookout and then enters a continuous section of the tunnels.

Once the train passes Oakridge, it passes through a series of twisting curves and through numerous tunnels. Please note that trains bound for Los Angeles run through this section from dusk to night unless there are major delays, so if you want to enjoy this view, I recommend taking the train bound for Seattle that passes through in the morning.
Near Chemult Station, BNSF Railway's Oregon Trunk Subdivision joins from the north. That line is a route from Portland,OR for Union Pacific Railroad's rival freight railroad, BNSF Railroad. BNSF's freight trains travel on Union Pacific Railroad Cascade Subdivision tracks from Chemult to Klamath Falls, the next station.
列車はオークリッジを過ぎると、つづら折りのカーブを多数のトンネルを通りながら通過します。なお、ロサンゼルス行きの列車は大幅な遅れがない限り夕方から夜間にかけてこの区間を走行するため、こちらの景色を楽しみたい場合には朝方に通過するシアトル行きの列車に乗車するのがおすすめです。

Klamath Falls Station is located halfway between Portland, OR and Sacramento. BNSF Railroad freight trains diverge from there to the BNSF Gateway Subdivision. From Klamath Falls Station, the Amtrak "Coast Starlight" enters the Union Pacific Railroad's Valley Subdivision.

After passing Worden, the train enters California from Oregon. From the S-curve just before Dunsmuir station, the line parallels the Sacramento River.

From Dunsmuir Station to Redding Station, the train travels through a section with many curves and tunnels along the Sacramento River.

The area from Redding to Sacramento is called the Sacramento Valley. Reading originally began to prosper as a mining town during the gold rush, but today it has a thriving lumber industry and there are numerous freight rail sidings.

At Tehama Junction, the West Valley Subdivision branches off. The West Valley Subdivision runs from there to Davis Station, providing a shortcut route from Redding to Oakland and San Jose without going through Sacramento.

In Marysville, there is a diamond crossing, where Valley Subdivision and Sacramento Subdivision of the Union Pacific Railroad intersect at grade. The Amtrak "Coast Starlight" enters the Sacramento Subdivision from the Valley Subdivision at that junction.
Just before Sacramento station, the train enters the Martinez Subdivision of the Union Pacific Railroad, the route of the Amtrak "California Zephyr" from Chicago, Denver, and Salt Lake City. Sacramento Station is the gateway to California's capital, Sacramento, and this is the terminal station for the Amtrak "Capitol Corridor", which connects Sacramento and San Jose, and the Amtrak "San Joakins", which connects Sacramento and Bakersfield, as well as Light Rail Trains called "Sacramento RT". In the future, the station will also serve California High Speed Rail trains from Los Angeles.
