The HSL-Zuid and HSL4 high-speed rail lines, with maximum speeds of 300 km/h, run from Rotterdam, a city in the south of the Netherlands, to Brussels, Belgium.
After the train leaves Rotterdam Central Station, it will run on a quadruple-track section that is electrified with 1500V DC for a while. After passing through Rotterdam Lombardijen station, the train enters a junction where it crosses over other lines and changes direction from right-hand traffic in the Netherlands to left-hand traffic in Belgium. The train then enters HSL-Zuid, a new high-speed line electrified with AC 25kv 50hz.
At Antwerpen-Nooderdokken station, HSL4 joins Belgian Lines 12 and 27 at a junction. The high-speed train goes underground after passing Antwerp Luchtbal Station and arrives at Antwerp Central Station on the second basement floor.
Antwerp Central Station is a huge terminal station, with Thalys and IC trains platform on the second basement floor, a four-line head-end platform on the first basement floor, and a dead-end platform on the ground floor. The train runs on "Line 25" from Antwerp Central Station to Brussels.
Mechelen station, which connects to line 53, is undergoing improvements and an elevated platform will be added.
From Mechelen onward, high-speed trains run on the 25N line. The maximum speed of a train from Mechelen to Brussels on line 25 was previously 120 km/h, but on line 25N it can run at 160 km/h.
Near Schaarbeek station, the 25N line joins the 36N line from Cologne, Germany. Brussels is a large city with an urban population of over 1.2 million and a metropolitan area population of over 2.5 million, with heavy railway traffic and many railway lines converging.
Although Brussels North Station and Brussels Central Station are terminal stations in Brussels, the high-speed train "Thalys" generally does not stop at these stations.
Brussels South Station is the busiest terminal station in Brussels, and is also a stop for the Thalys high-speed train. The train travels approximately 140km from Rotterdam to Brussels in 1 hour and 10 minutes.
